Sometimes the most daunting problems can have simple solutions.

Take, for example, the Liftware Base Stabilizer spoon, which was recently acquired by Google, according to The Associated Press. The utensil allows people who live with essential tremors or Parkinson’s disease to feed themselves and more comfortably eat on their own.

Lift Labs, the company that created Liftware, was developed by a group of four scientists and engineers who were motivated to create the device after witnessing the struggles of their own family and friends, according to their website.

“I wanted to create something that would allow people to go out to restaurants or simply enjoy a meal without stress,” Anupam Pathak, Lift Lab founder, says in the video below.

The technology works by sensing how a hand is shaking and making instant adjustments to keep the utensil balanced and keep food on the spoon or fork, according to the AP. Clinical trials showed that it reduced shaking by an average of 76 percent.

“If you build something with your hands and it has that sort of an impact, it’s the greatest feeling ever,” Pathak told the outlet. “As an engineer who likes to build things, that’s the most validating thing that can happen.”
